The Nurture Assumption- Why Children Turn Out The Way They Do

終於收到盼望已久的英文版【教養的迷思】— 【The Nurture Assumption- Why children Turn Out The Way They Do 】。誠如老師所說，要找出譯者翻譯原文的錯誤非常容易，然而要由自己做出完全無錯誤的翻譯，卻不是想像中的簡單。在中英對照的閱讀過程中，非常驚訝地發現許多不可思議的錯誤，有的是明顯的誤譯，有些似乎是作者有意或無意的漏譯，也有一些翻譯是直譯，雖然語意上是ｏｋ的，但是如果能多加思考，換個表達方式，會使內文更通順，更貼近原文作者的心思。洪蘭在學術界聲望很高，在出版界的著作和譯作產量豐富。我以虛心的態度評析她在譯書中值得提出來討論的句子，希望自己能透過這份作業，對翻譯有多的認識和進步。
拿到書之後，我迫不及待地打開書中“Searching for the Key” 這一個小節，仔細閱讀原文之後，我仍然認為，原文作者應該是使用雙關語的用法，我建議的重譯是「尋找關鍵的因素」。雖然本小節的其中一段提到許多學者認定孩子的行為一定是由家庭的因素所影響，所以研究影響的因素時，只侷限在家庭的範圍中尋找答案， 就像人們尋找遺失的鑰匙的心態一樣：「鑰匙一定是在家裡的某個地方！」然而，本小節主要探討的是大眾認為孩子的行為是由先天、後天、兩者皆是、或甚至是兩者皆非的因素所影響，究竟何者為關鍵的因素。故把“Searching for the Key” 譯成「尋找鑰匙」似乎不是非常適當。

以下是我在【教養的迷思】一書中發現值得討論的翻譯：

1.
原譯：只有亞歷桑那大學的一位遺傳學家大衛．羅（David Rowe)指出父母並不是孩子生命中的唯一影響，家庭以外的環境可能對孩子來說更重要。其他的人繼續在家庭內找答案，就像我們找鑰匙一樣：「總是在家裡的某個地方」。（p.73)

原文：Only one behavioral geneticist, David Rowe of the University of Arizona, pointed out that parents aren’t the be-all and end-all of the child’s life and that the child has environments other than the home— environments that might be more important. The others went on searching inside the home, like people looking for a lost key:“ It’s got to be in here somewhere. ” (p.53)

評析：others譯成其他的人，容易使讀者產生混淆。應更清楚說明是其他的學者。
“ It’s got to be in here somewhere. ” 原譯：「總是在家裡的某個地方」。並沒有把 got to be 的語意翻出。

重譯：其他的學者則繼續在家庭的因素中尋找答案，就像人們尋找遺失的鑰匙心態一樣：「鑰匙一定是在家裡的某個地方！」

2.
原譯： 或許你也是在想「一定在家裡的某個地方」。 每個人都知道父母有關係。（p.74)
原文：Perhaps you are too thinking, “It’s got to be in there somewhere!” Everyone knows that parents make a difference!(p.54)
評析：譯者把 make a difference翻成有關係，有什麼樣子的關係呢？如果能夠多加具體的描述，會使文章更通順。在此的make a difference 應是指對孩子性格養成的影響。
重譯： 或許你也認為：「關鍵因素一定在家裡的某個地方！」 大家都知道父母的教養會造成影響。


3.
原譯：五萬個心理學家不可能全都錯。（p.74)
原文： Fifty thousand psychologists couldn’t possibly be wrong!(p.54)
評析：這一段話應該是引用美國七十年代（1970s)的巨星Elvis Presley 出版過的一張專輯的封面名稱：“50,000,000 Elvis Fans Can't Be Wrong.”，由於Elvis在搖滾界的地位，在英文中，這一句話被大量引用。原意指的是，Elvis的魅力無遠弗屆，上千萬的歌迷愛戴他，既然有那麼多歌迷為Elvis瘋狂，那麼他們的選擇是絕不會錯的。所以，原譯說五萬個心理學家不可能全都錯，並不適切。（ 50,000,000 Elvis Fans Can't Be Wrong: Elvis' Gold Records Volume 2 is the ninth album by Elvis Presley, issued on RCA Records, LPM 2075, in November of 1959.)
重譯：五萬個心理學家都這麼說，絕對錯不了。


4.
原譯：機能障礙的家庭不是造成了機能障礙的孩子嗎？（p.74)
原文：What about all the evidence that dysfunctional families produce dysfunctional kids? (p.54)
評析： dysfunctional families 譯成機能障礙的家庭，dysfunctional kids 機能障礙的孩子是直譯，沒有把意思說明清楚。
重譯：所有證據不是都指出問題家庭造成問題兒童嗎？


5.
原譯：．．．後天— 父母所為我們做的一切— 已經被發現沒有影響。（p.74)
原文： Nature — the DNA we get from our parents—has been shown to have effects but it can’t be the whole story. Nurture — all the other things our parents to us — has not been shown to have effects despite heroic efforts on its behalf. (p.54)
評析： has not been shown to have effects 已經被發現沒有影響，是誤譯，應譯為並沒有被證實有影響。
重譯：．．．後天— 父母所為我們做的一切— 除了偉大的親情本身，後天的教養並沒有被證實有影響。
