原文: Joseph arrived in Missouri in May and had the summer to acquire some English-speaking friends and begin to learn their language. When school started at the end of August, the psycholinguists estimated his ability to speak English as about that of a two-year-old. The school provided him with no translator and no special classes for kids who can’t speak English. He was put into a second-grade classroom with children of his own age, none of whom could speak Polish, and a teacher who couldn’t speak Polish either. All his instruction was in English. It is a method sometimes referred to as “ sink or swim. ” (p.254)
評析: 這一段最大的問題在於成語的不當使用,在教育部的國語辭典上是這樣解釋“孤注一擲“:「賭博時,傾其所有而下注,由一擲來決勝負,希望最後能贏錢。後多比喻危急時投入全部力量,作最後的冒險行動。孽海花˙第三十三回:無如,他被全臺的公憤逼迫得沒有回旋餘地,只好挺身而出,作孤注一擲了。」在本文中用「孤注一擲」譯(sink or swim),似乎不妥。翻譯上要儘量避免用成語,因為很多成語都是有典故的,若非百分之百符合典故的由來和引申的含意,那麼譯者就不該用成語簡單帶過這一個重要詞語的翻譯。
試譯: 上課都是以英文進行,這樣的方法常被認為是「如果不想溺水的話就想辦法游吧—讓他自生自滅」(sink or swim)的學習方式。
